Chennai Weather: Tamil Nadu is set to experience heavy rainfall from January 12 to 15 due to a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal. A yellow alert has been issued for four districts, while Chennai expects light to moderate rain. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has indicated that the State may experience above-average rainfall during this period.
The northeast monsoon is anticipated to withdraw from Tamil Nadu around January 15. However, the influence of the cyclonic circulation, which extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level in the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal, is expected to bring significant rainfall to several districts. Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Pudukottai, Ranipet, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai are likely to see heavy rainfall over the next two days.
Additionally, a yellow warning has been issued for intense rainfall in four districts: Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari, expected on January 14 and 15. Light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, is also forecast for various northern and southern regions of the State.According to extended predictions from dynamical models, many parts of Tamil Nadu can expect above-normal rainfall until January 16. From January 17 to January 23, normal rainfall activity is forecast to resume.
Fishermen in Tamil Nadu have been advised against venturing into the sea for the next two days. Squally weather with wind speeds of 35 km/h to 45 km/h, gusting up to 55 km/h, is likely over the southern Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar and adjacent Comorin area. Those currently at sea are urged to return to shore as soon as possible.
