Delhi On Yellow Alert For Thunderstorms Today After Storm; Cool Weather To Continue

Delhi Weather: IMD has issued yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning today after a dust storm shook city on April 10. Residents today woke up to cool and chilly weather, bringing much-needed relief from heatwave conditions. Delhi: After a stormy weather on Thursday, Delhi-NCR woke up to pleasant and chilly weather condition, bringing much-needed relief from the scorching heatwave residents were reeling in. On April 10, a sudden dust storm took the city by surprise, which later brought a brief spell of rain, cooling down the temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning today.

Storms Sweep In, Rain to Follow Thursday evening brought dramatic skies as dust storms swept across Delhi, signaling the arrival of an incoming Western Disturbance. The IMD has forecast light rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds for Thursday and Friday, placing the city under a yellow alert. With the influence of the Western Disturbance, rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds are expected over northwest India during 10–11 April. As a result, heatwave conditions will reduce significantly from 10 April,” the IMD said.

The heat has been relentless over the past week, with temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius since Monday. On Wednesday night, Delhi recorded its warmest April night in three years, a sultry 25.9 degrees Celsius, which was 5.9 degrees above the seasonal average. This broke the previous day’s record of 25.6 degrees Celsius.

Thursday morning wasn’t any better. The minimum temperature once again settled at 25.9 degrees Celsius, leaving residents tossing and turning through the night. Temporary Respite, Heatwave May Return While the upcoming showers may cool things down temporarily, the relief could be short-lived. Weather models suggest heatwave conditions may return to Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana from 15 April onwards. So while umbrellas may come out for the next two days, sun hats and water bottles shouldn’t be stashed away just yet.

Meanwhile, the newly elected Rekha Gupta-led government has announced a bold move to tackle the capital’s persistent dust pollution. The administration will install 1,000 water sprinklers on streetlight poles across the city in a bid to suppress airborne dust, especially in high-traffic areas. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta told PTI that the sprinklers and smog guns will now be operated year-round, unlike the previous government’s seasonal approach. For now, all eyes are on the skies, will the rains deliver the promised relief, or will Delhi continue to sweat it out a little longer?
