The advisory comes as a massive undersea earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale struck off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Wednesday, triggering tsunami waves that hit both Russia and Japan. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the quake originated at a depth of about 74 kilometres (46 miles) beneath the ocean floor, with tremors felt across the northwest Pacific. The resulting tsunami flooded the remote Russian port town of Severo-Kurilsk in the Sakhalin region, while in Japan, waves struck coastal areas of Hokkaido, prompting the Meteorological Agency to issue a tsunami warning for Tokyo Bay and raise the expected wave height to three meters.
