After a brief respite, Mumbai is set to face another wet spell as IMD issues a yellow alert for Tuesday and Wednesday. Heavy rainfall is expected in isolated areas of Mumbai, Thane, Palghar and Konkan districts, while light drizzles will continue until then.
After a brief lull, Mumbai is set to be lashed by another spell of heavy rainfall this week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and its neighbouring districts of Thane and Palghar on Tuesday and Wednesday, warning of heavy showers in isolated areas.
Between Saturday and Sunday morning, Mumbai recorded only light rainfall. The Santacruz rain gauge registered 1.9 mm, while Colaba observatory saw 0.7 mm. This came as a much-needed break after the city was pounded with over 900 mm of rain in just four days between August 16 and 19. The downpour had already pushed August’s monthly rainfall tally to more than double the average, and the seasonal average too was surpassed by August 20.
Meteorologists have now indicated that the subdued phase of rainfall will end from Tuesday. IMD’s latest forecast suggests that Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts will be under a yellow alert on August 26 and 27, with heavy rain expected in isolated pockets. Moderate rain is likely before and after this period. The warning has also been extended to other Konkan districts. Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg have been placed under a yellow alert for four consecutive days, from Monday to Thursday, as the region braces for widespread rain activity.
