Mumbai is bracing for more heavy rainfall with the India Meteorological Department issuing a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning. Following a brief respite over the weekend, residents are advised to keep umbrellas handy as thunderstorms are predicted for the week ahead.
Mumbai Weather: After a brief break during the weekend but heavy lashing on Monday, Mumbai is once again set to face heavy showers with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) placing the city under a yellow alert. With thunderstorms, lightning and spells of heavy rain expected, Mumbaikars may need to keep their umbrellas close at hand as the city heads into another rain-soaked week.
On Tuesday, 22 September, the IMD issued a yellow alert warning of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy rainfall across Mumbai and its adjoining areas. The wet weather is expected to continue, with isolated heavy showers forecast for Monday, 26 September.
Mumbai’s suburban train network, often described as the city’s lifeline, has also felt the effects of the downpour. Services on the Central and Harbour lines were delayed by around 10 to 15 minutes on Monday, leaving peak-hour commuters struggling with longer waiting times and crowded platforms. While the delays were relatively minor compared to the severe disruptions seen in past monsoons, the recurring waterlogging at low-lying tracks continues to test the resilience of Mumbai’s rail system. For today, if the rain gets intense and waterlogging turns severe, commuters may face slight delays.
Despite still having over a week left in September, the IMD’s Santacruz observatory has already recorded close to 400 mm of rainfall, surpassing the monthly average of 383.5 mm. For residents weary of endless showers, there is a silver lining: Mumbai’s seven lakes that supply water to the city are now brimming at full capacity, holding 14.42 lakh million litres or 99.67%. Interestingly, last year on the same date, water stocks stood at a similar level of 14.26 lakh million litres.
For now, Mumbaikars can expect brief relief with partly cloudy skies before heavier spells return later in the week. While commuters may have to deal with minor disruptions, the full lakes ensure that the city’s water needs remain secure. With September rainfall already over the monthly average, the city continues its yearly tussle with the monsoon, balancing between inconvenience and much-needed resources.
