Why Has Telangana Called For A Bandh? All You Need To Know

On October 18, Telangana experienced a widespread bandh supported by major political parties, including Congress, BJP, and BRS, in response to the High Court’s decision to suspend 42% reservation for Backward Classes in local elections.

Telangana woke up to a day of protest and political solidarity on October 18, as the state observed a bandh backed by major parties including the Congress, BJP, and BRS. The call for the shutdown came from the Telangana Backward Class Joint Action Committee (BC JAC) in response to the Telangana High Court’s decision to halt 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections, as per reports.

The bandh stems from the Telangana High Court’s ruling on 9 October, which stayed the state government’s order granting 42% reservation for BCs in local body polls. The verdict was met with anger and disappointment among BC communities, who see it as a blow to their representation in governance.

Political leaders across parties have voiced concerns and demanded a legislative resolution. The state government, along with opposition leaders, is urging the Centre to approve the BC Bill to safeguard the community’s quota rights.

The protest has brought together parties that are usually on opposite ends of the political spectrum. The Congress, BJP, and BRS have all extended support to the bandh, recognising the significance of the issue.
Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka described the protest as a “demonstration against the BJP,” calling on Union Ministers G Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay, along with State BJP President R Ramachander Rao, to raise the matter with the Prime Minister and President to secure approval for the BC Bill.

With demonstrations and processions expected across Telangana, DGP B Shivadhar Reddy has appealed to the public to ensure that the protest remains peaceful. He warned that any unlawful behaviour would invite strict action, reiterating that maintaining peace was crucial for public safety.

Citizens have been advised to plan travel and daily activities in advance, as certain transport routes may face disruptions due to the bandh.
