Himachal under winter siege: Cold day warning in Shimla, Manali may freeze at -1 degrees with heavy snowfall.

Himachal Pradesh is likely to witness heavy snowfall in the higher hills on Tuesday, the Met office has predicted. The IMD has issued orange alert for Kullu, Kinnaur, Chamba, and Lahaul and Spiti districts for January 27. Manali is likely to witness moderate snow today with maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 5 degrees and 1 degrees Celsius, respectively. Light snow is also likely tomorrow with minimum temperatures dropping to -1 degrees Celsius, the IMD said. Shimla may witness a cold day today with thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds (40-50kmph) with rain and snowfall likely on Tuesday with the IMD issuing a yellow alert. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 8 degrees and 3 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Police have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel until weather conditions improve and to refrain from visiting high-altitude areas or places near rivers, streams and avalanche-prone zones. The IMD has forecast light to moderate snowfall across most parts of Himachal Pradesh over the next few days. The weather office said isolated spells of heavy rain and snow is likely on January 27, particularly in the middle and high hill regions.

According to the IMD’s Meteorological Centre in Shimla, very light snowfall was recorded at isolated locations in the past 24 hours, while minimum temperatures largely remained normal to near normal. The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at Kukumseri in Lahaul and Spiti at minus 10.2 degrees Celsius, while Paonta Sahib registered the highest maximum temperature at 22 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Cold wave and cold day conditions are likely to prevail at isolated places over the low hills and plains from January 28 onwards, while dense fog is expected in parts of Bilaspur, Una, Mandi and Paonta Sahib districts over the next few days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, have also been warned at isolated places in several districts, including Shimla, Kangra, Mandi and Solan.
