First Monsoon Showers In Mumbai: IMD Warns Of Thunderstorms, Lightning As Rain Relief Finally Reaches City

Mumbai woke up to rain and cloudy skies as the IMD issued thunderstorm and lightning alerts, with forecasters saying the monsoon is strengthening over the Arabian Sea and rainfall is set to intensify across the Konkan region.

After weeks of concern over a rain deficit and delayed monsoon progress across parts of Maharashtra, Mumbai and neighbouring districts woke up to cloudy skies and widespread showers on Monday (June 22), bringing fresh hopes of stronger monsoon activity in the region.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, with rain activity expected to continue through the day.According to the IMD, Mumbai and Thane are likely to witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph at isolated places.

Palghar is also expected to receive light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and winds of 30-40 kmph in some areas.Several parts of Mumbai reported rain during the early morning hours. Residents shared visuals of showers from Breach Candy, Mira Road and South Mumbai, while dark clouds covered large parts of the city skyline.

Drizzle was also reported from Nahur, Mulund, Bhandup, Taloja and Sanpada, while thunder was heard in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). Weather observers said rain bands were moving towards central parts of Mumbai, including Sion, Kurla, Ghatkopar and BKC, as well as sections of the western suburbs.

AccuWeather has forecast mostly cloudy conditions throughout the day. Mumbai’s maximum temperature is expected to remain around 34 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may settle near 27 degrees Celsius. The probability of precipitation stands at 89 per cent.Weather agencies expect Mumbai’s wet spell to continue over the coming days. According to AccuWeather, the city has an 89 per cent chance of rainfall on Monday, raising the possibility of intermittent showers and traffic disruptions during peak hours.

Residents heading outdoors are advised to carry umbrellas and keep travel plans flexible as sudden spells of rain may affect road conditions across parts of the city.

The rainy pattern is expected to persist through the week. Forecasts indicate a 91 per cent chance of precipitation on Tuesday, June 23, with a similar likelihood of rain on Wednesday. Rainfall activity may ease slightly during the latter half of the week, with precipitation chances ranging between 55 and 64 per cent from Thursday to Saturday.
