A robbery attempt at Shamrao Vithal Bank on RHB Road on March 22 was thwarted after an alert watchman with the help of a few passersby managed to catch the three thieves.
This is the second time that a robbery has been attempted at the same bank. On Feb 17, two cheats were arrested from the bank premises after bank employees became suspicious of them (metro Feb 19-25).On March 22, one of the bank’s watchmen, Joginder Rai noticed the three men who had visited the bank at around 11 am on the pretext of withdrawing money.
According to Rai, he became suspicious after he saw them walking up and down and inspecting the bank. “When I asked them why they had come to the bank, they said they had come to withdraw money. Then I asked them to show the passbook.” At this point, the men pushed Rai down and ran towards the door.
However, he managed to grab one of the robbers. Meanwhile, the other two managed to run out of the bank. However, both the guards along with a few people who had witnessed the incident gave chase. They managed to nab one robber who slipped while trying to scale a wall near Vijay Nagar chowky, where two police personnel also joined them. The third robber managed to escape. An official from the bank says, “We have now appointed four watchmen.”The arrested are Sahir Hussain Ahmed (24) and Kaibar Papli Hussain (21). According to the police, both culprits are Kalyan residents and have been involved in several petty robberies. “We are still investigating the case. These robbers don’t seem to be part of the gang, which committed the big bank robberies that have taken place recently,” says Vivek Gogi, senior inspector, Mulund police station.
