Following a weather warning by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Karnataka government has declared a public holiday for schools in Bengaluru Urban district on October 23, 2024. The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert, indicating potentially severe weather with heavy rainfall, prompting safety measures across the city.
Public holiday and school closures
Bengaluru District Commissioner Jagadeesha G announced that all anganwadi centers, private, and government schools across Bengaluru Urban district will remain closed. However, higher education institutions, such as degree colleges, postgraduate courses, diploma, engineering, and ITI colleges, will continue to function as scheduled.
This marks the third school closure in Bengaluru within a week due to continuous rainfall. The government has instructed schools to make up for lost teaching hours by conducting extra classes on Saturday afternoons or Sundays. The commissioner urged parents and students to avoid waterlogged areas for their safety.
In a parallel move, the Department of IT-BT and Electronics issued an advisory for employees in the IT, BT, and private sectors to work from home on October 23. The advisory highlighted the potential dangers posed by the weather and stressed the importance of ensuring employee safety.
Bengaluru has been grappling with waterlogging in key areas like Outer Ring Road and Sarjapur Road. Lakes in the northern parts of the city, including Yelahanka, Kogilu, and Kannur, have overflowed, severely impacting nearby residential areas. The IMD forecasts that rains will likely persist in Bengaluru until October 24, 2024, with further updates expected.
The city’s residents are urged to stay informed of the latest weather developments and to follow safety precautions to mitigate the impact of the heavy rains.
