Chennai Airport experienced significant disruptions as IndiGo cancelled all outbound flights on Friday, following a week of delays and operational challenges. On Thursday, numerous flights faced delays, with some arrivals and departures running late by up to four hours. The chaos affected both domestic and international services, prompting at least 26 flight cancellations, primarily from IndiGo.
Chennai Airport witnessed major disruption on Friday as IndiGo cancelled all outbound flights from the city till evening, prompting authorities to issue a traffic advisory for passengers heading to the airport. The cancellations come on the back of a turbulent week, with the airport already grappling with widespread delays and operational strain through Thursday.
Domestic departures mirrored the chaos. IndiGo’s early-morning service to Delhi (6E0456) left the terminal more than three hours late, while flights to Kolkata and Port Blair lagged by over two hours. Even carriers such as Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways experienced moderate delays, indicating that the operational strain extended beyond a single airline.
At least 26 departures—mostly IndiGo services—were cancelled on Thursday for “operational reasons”, disrupting travel to major metros including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Pune and Hyderabad. Regional routes to Coimbatore, Guwahati, and Visakhapatnam were also affected.
Short-haul international flights did not escape the turbulence. Services to Colombo and the Andaman Islands’ Veer Savarkar Airport were removed from the day’s roster. On the arrivals side, at least five flights from Indore, Mumbai, Kochi, Jaipur and Ahmedabad were cancelled.
In anticipation of heavy passenger congestion and increased vehicular movement, authorities issued a traffic advisory for those heading to the airport. Commuters have been advised to factor in additional travel time, use designated drop-off points, and avoid peak-hour bottlenecks on Grand Southern Trunk Road and surrounding access routes.
