Chennai braces for heavy monsoon rain as IMD issues a yellow alert and tracks a deep depression likely to form Cyclone Ditwah, bringing intense showers through the week with fluctuating cloudy conditions.
As the Northeast Monsoon intensifies over Tamil Nadu, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issues a heavy rainfall alert for several districts, including Chennai. The department has palced Chennai under a “yellow alert”, predicting heavy to very heavy rain along with thunderstorms.
IMD also warns that Chennai will see moderate rain and thunderstorms, keeping the city under continued caution. Temperatures are expected to stay around 29°C during the day, while the minimum may fall to 23°C.
After Cyclone Senyar moved away from the Indian coast, another low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal strengthens into a deep depression and begins developing towards a cyclonic storm, according to IMD.
If it forms, it will be named ‘Cyclone Ditwah’. The system is likely to influence Chennai, other parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the adjoining south Andhra Pradesh coast. Rapid intensification may bring heavy rainfall to these southern states over the next few days.
The IMD states that the system is very likely to continue moving north-northwestwards across the southwest Bay of Bengal and the area near Sri Lanka, where it is expected to intensify further into a cyclonic storm within the next few hours.
