Chennai on Heavy Rain Alert: Will the Weather Improve Soon? Here’s What Experts Say; Weekly Forecast Inside

Chennai experiences heavy rain as winter begins, with IMD issuing a yellow alert. Widespread showers, thunderstorms, and cooler temperatures expected across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Coastal Andhra, and nearby regions until 19 November.

Chennai is witnessing heavy rainfall as winter begins, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert for the city. Officials have urged residents to stay cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and plan their outdoor activities carefully. Weather experts say that the second half of November is expected to remain rainy for Chennai and the surrounding southern states.

According to the IMD, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and the nearby islands will see widespread rainfall over the next few days. Light to moderate rain, along with thunderstorms, is likely in many parts of Tamil Nadu on 12, 17, and 18 November. Kerala and Mahe are expected to receive similar rain on 12 and 13 November, while Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema could see heavy showers on 17 and 18 November.

The weather office has also warned of thunderstorms with lightning in Tamil Nadu on 12 and 17 November, in Kerala and Mahe between 12 and 14 November, and in parts of Karnataka on 17 and 18 November.

Meteorologists say these conditions are due to a cyclonic circulation over the southwest and southeast Bay of Bengal. In simple terms, this means there is a rotating weather system in the atmosphere that is pulling in moisture from the sea, leading to continuous clouds and widespread rainfall across the region.
