Curfew was imposed indenitely in Manipur’s Lilong assembly constituency on Monday after a mob torched the house of BJP Minority Morcha state president Md Asker Ali for supporting the aqf Amendment Act. According to Thoubal District Magistrate A Subhash Singh, around 7,000-8,000 people attacked Ali’s house in Lilong Sambrukhong on Sunday night. In light of the tense situation and risk of further unrest, curfew under Section 63 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) was enforced across the constituency. Ali had supported the Waqf Act in social media posts on Saturday, triggering protests across the valley, including road blockades and clashes in Imphal East and Thoubal
Meanwhile, security forces were red upon by suspected militants during search operations in the hills and valley. A large camp used by miscreants was discovered, and three people involved in a recent arson case were arrested in follow-up raids. Police have urged the public not to fall for social media Protests against the Waqf Act broke out in Assam’s Sribhumi and Patharkandi, prompting authorities to impose prohibitory orders. A senior police said thousands gathered after being mobilised on social media, despite permission for only 300. Protestors reportedly stormed government misinformation.
