Delhi NCR rains: IMD issues thunderstorm & lightning warning; AQI remains ‘very poor’

Delhi weather and rain forecast: Delhi and NCR saw early morning rain, with thunderstorms and lightning expected until Saturday. Despite the rain, air quality remains “very poor,” with AQI over 300. Minimum temperatures will stay above 12 degrees Celsius, and maximums around 20 degrees Celsius. GRAP Stage 4 restrictions lifted.

New Delhi :The entire National Capital Region (NCR), including Noida, New Delhi, and Greater Noida is witnessing early morning rains today. Notably, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted similar weather conditions in the region with anticipated thunderstorms and lightning on Friday, which is expected to extend until Saturday. However, to a slight respite, the minimum temperature in the capital city is not expected to fall below 12 degrees Celsius on both days, with the maximum range hovering around 20 degrees Celsius, as the day progresses.

It is also worth mentioning that despite witnessing an unexpected spell of rain, Delhi today is still witnessing an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 371 as per Central Government’s Sameer App, placing it it in ‘VERY POOR’ category. Followed by Delhi, other NCR cities including Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad are also experiencing bad quality of air with readings recorded as 345, 287, 268, 346, and 270 respectively.

On Tuesday, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) announced that it had lifted Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) for the Delhi-NCR region, following a notable improvement in air quality. This decision was based on reports from ANI. Although Stage 4 has been revoked, the measures outlined in Stages 1, 2, and 3 will remain in effect to continue managing pollution levels.

The move came after Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) fell to 369 by 4 p.m. on Tuesday, which is classified as “very poor.” Stage 4 of GRAP had been implemented on December 16 when the AQI had soared to 401, a “severe” level, in line with Supreme Court directives.
