Germany, Austria-origin bomb threat emails set off panic in Punjab courts

Bomb threat emails disrupted work for several hours at district courts across Punjab on Thursday, even as Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal vowed to wage a war on gangsters and dismantle their networks in the state.

District courts in Ludhiana, Ropar, Ferozepur, Mansa and Moga received the threatening emails. The judicial complexes were evacuated and bomb squads were deployed to conduct extensive searches, but no explosives were found.

The Anandpur Sahib judicial complex was also evacuated as a precautionary measure. Police investigations traced the emails to Austria and Germany, with the senders using the Tor network and VPN services to mask their identities, Special DGP (Cybercrime) V Neerja said.

Speaking at a function in Ludhiana, Mann and Kejriwal said a full-scale war against gangsters, on the lines of ‘Yudh Nasheyan Virudh’, would be launched soon.

Ferozepur also witnessed chaos after a threat email warned of explosives set to detonate at 2.30 pm. The court complex was evacuated, and more than 150 police personnel, including senior officers, conducted extensive searches. Routine work resumed later in the day after no explosives were found. Advocates condemned the threats as attacks on the judiciary and demanded strict action against those responsible.
