The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that an intense western disturbance is set to impact northwest India from January 21 onwards, triggering widespread rainfall, snowfall, thunderstorms and cold wave conditions across several regions. The IMD, in its weather bulletin, said the Western Himalayan region is likely to witness fairly widespread to widespread rain and snowfall between January 22 and January 26. Isolated heavy snowfall is expected over the Kashmir Valley on January 22 and 23, while higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may receive heavy snowfall on January 23, it added.
Adjoining plains of northwest India, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and west Uttar Pradesh, are likely to experience isolated to scattered light to moderate rainfall between January 22 and 24, as per IMD. East Uttar Pradesh may receive rain on January 23 and 24, while parts of Rajasthan are likely to see rainfall on January 22 and 23.
Thunderstorm activity accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, with wind speeds reaching 30-50 kmph, is expected over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh during this period.
