India is experiencing contrasting weather patterns this week, with northern regions facing severe cold and hazardous air quality, while southern areas brace for Cyclone Senyar. In Delhi, pollution levels have surged, prompting health warnings, particularly for vulnerable populations.
India is witnessing two very different moods of weather this week, one side wrapped in biting cold and toxic smog, the other preparing for heavy rain and a brewing storm over the Bay of Bengal. While Delhi struggles to breathe through deteriorating air quality, southern and coastal regions have been put on alert as Cyclone Senyar continues to strengthen.
The winter chill has begun to settle in across North and East India. Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand have already witnessed fresh snowfall in higher regions, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures across the plains.
In Delhi-NCR, cold weather has returned with an all-too-familiar problem — pollution. On Wednesday, AQI levels in Bawana shot up to 382, falling under the ‘Very Poor’ category. The air is thick enough to make stepping outside without a mask risky, especially for children, the elderly, and people with respiratory issues. The air feels heavier, the mornings hazier — winter has arrived, but so has the smog.
Meanwhile, the southern half of India faces a very different threat. Weather systems developing repeatedly over the Bay of Bengal have increased the possibility of Cyclone Senyar growing stronger in the coming days. This could bring intense rainfall to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Andaman–Nicobar Islands.
Tamil Nadu: Heavy rain till 30 November, with very heavy spells between 28–30 November Kerala & Mahe: Heavy rain likely on 26 November Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam & Rayalaseema: Heavy rain 29 Nov – 1 Dec; very heavy showers around 30 November Andaman & Nicobar Islands: Rain continues till 29 November, with very heavy rain on 26–27 Nov Thunderstorms and lightning alerts are active for most southern states. Wind speeds may reach 50–60 kmph in Andaman–Nicobar till 28 November.
