Kolkata Weather: Kolkata and South Bengal are set for a stormy week as the IMD issues multiple alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds. While North Bengal may see some relief, Kolkata continues to battle waterlogging, humidity and weather disruptions ahead of the festive season.
Kolkata woke up on Tuesday to waterlogged streets and a grey sky as rain from overnight showers left several areas inundated. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds for the city and much of South Bengal through the week, with multiple alerts in place.
Due to a low-pressure system forming, the sky is expected to remain cloudy across South Bengal throughout Tuesday. Rain accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds is likely in nearly every district. The IMD has issued an orange alert for South 24 Parganas where heavy to very heavy rain is expected.
In contrast, rainfall activity will gradually decrease across North Bengal. On Tuesday, districts like Malda, North Dinajpur and South Dinajpur are under a yellow alert due to expected thundershowers and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph. From Wednesday onwards, only light to moderate rain with lightning is forecast across districts, with no further warnings in place.
Commuters are advised to avoid the following stretches where flooding and traffic snarls are frequently reported: AJC Bose Road – often submerged during monsoon showers. APC Roy Road – a regular trouble spot in heavy rain.Maa Flyover (west-bound flank) – traffic slows down considerably due to flooding. EM Bypass (various stretches, including Ruby Crossing) – key junctions experience severe waterlogging. Park Circus Connector – especially near the 7-Point Crossing and Maa Flyover. Sarat Bose Road (north-bound) – vehicles often stranded due to stagnant water. Amir Ali Avenue – both directions face disruption in downpours. CR Avenue, Chittaranjan Avenue, MG Road, BB Ganguly Street, Park Street – central Kolkata roads prone to flooding after overnight rain.
These areas are best avoided during peak rain hours to prevent long delays. Commuters may consider alternate routes until conditions improve.
