Kolkata witnessed rainfall on Tuesday evening as dark clouds covered the city, with the weather department issuing an orange alert for multiple districts in south Bengal. Light to moderate rain began across parts of the city, with some areas experiencing steady showers while others saw heavier rainfall. Gusty winds were also reported, adding to the sudden change in weather.
The India Meteorological Department’s Alipore office has warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds in at least six districts of south Bengal over the next few hours. The forecast for March 31 indicates rain or thundershowers with gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph. In some places, wind speeds may increase further, with thundersqualls reaching up to 50–60 kmph.
The weather department has already issued warnings for north Bengal, where unstable weather conditions are expected to continue till Wednesday. Districts such as Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong and Alipurduar are likely to receive heavy rainfall, ranging between 7 to 11 cm on Tuesday. Strong winds with speeds of 40–50 kmph are also expected in these areas.
Residents have been advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid open areas during lightning activity, and take precautions against strong winds. The sudden spell of rain is expected to bring temporary relief from the heat but may also lead to localised disruptions in some areas.
