Mumbai enforced GRAP-4 in several high-pollution areas, intensifying dust control, monitoring construction, penalising violators, and empowering officials to curb emissions as AQI in hotspots remains persistently poor.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Friday implemented the first tier of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-4) in several pockets of the city where air quality has remained consistently poor through November. These areas includes: Mazgaon, Malad, Deonar, Borivali (East), Chakala–Andheri (East), Navy Nagar, Mulund (West) and Powai, which continue to report some of the highest pollution levels in Mumbai.
As part of GRAP-4, the civic body has intensified multiple dust-control measures. Therefore, roads in affected zones are being washed regularly, construction activity is under strict surveillance, and small industrial units violating air-quality norms are facing penalties.
BMC’s flying squads checked 70 construction sites in recent days and ordered work to stop at 53 locations for failing to meet the corporation’s pollution-control guidelines. In parallel, bakery operators in Mazgaon have been directed to remove old chimneys, marble-cutting units in Andheri East have been asked to shift to cleaner systems, and the MPCB has been instructed to take action against polluting industries and RMC plants in Deonar.
To tighten enforcement, 450 junior supervisors from the Solid Waste Management department have been given powers to levy fines for dust and waste-related violations. The push follows worrying AQI trends: Mazgaon saw “poor” air on 12 days and “very poor” on two days this month, while Deonar reported “poor” AQI on 14 days. With pollution refusing to ease, GRAP-4 measures will stay in place in these hotspots until the air shows clear signs of improvement.
