Mumbai Weather: Rain to Intensify, Yellow Alert for 4 Days, All Lakes Near 90% Full

Mumbai will see rain intensify from August 14 with a yellow alert in place. Seven lakes are nearly 90% full, while heavy showers may cause traffic delays and waterlogging. After a brief break from heavy rain, the city is likely to pick up the pace. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, effective from tomorrow, for a period of four days. Although there is no alert for today, August 13, a little to moderate rain will occur in parts of the city. Those planning to visit Thane, Raigad, Pune, and Ratnagiri today should know that these districts have been placed under a yellow alert till August 16.

Heavy rain in Mumbai triggered waterlogging in several parts of the city, slowing down traffic on key routes. If the rain intensity picks up, it may lead to severe waterlogging in the city. The water levels in seven lakes of Mumbai continue to remain near 90% capacity, holding a total of 12,91,030 million litres of usable water, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data showed on Tuesday. These seven lakes— Modak Sagar, Tansa, Bhatsa, Upper Vaitarna, Vehar, Tulsi and Middle Vaitarna— serve as a lifeline for Mumbai’s water needs and depend on rainfall to recharge.

The combined capacity of these lakes currently stands at 89.20%, as per the BMC data at 6 a.m. on Aug. 12. Last year, the water levels in these lakes collectively stood at 92.55% capacity on this day, according to the BMC.
