A dense layer of smog blanketed Delhi on Tuesday morning, with the air quality index (AQI) measured in the “very poor” category at an average of 355, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Visibility was reduced due to smog as well as shallower to moderate fog and mist during the morning hours, while it is expected to remain so in the evening and night.
According to the weather bulletin, the air quality in Delhi is likely to be in the ‘very poor’ category for the next 2 days.
Delhi has been grappling with severe air pollution for several weeks, attributed to stubble burning in nearby states, post-Diwali fireworks, and low wind speeds. According to the weather department, the humidity level was recorded at 96% at 8 am on Tuesday.
The weather forecast predicts clear skies during the day, with a maximum temperature likely reaching around 32 degrees Celsius.
On Monday, the AQI had also remained in the “very poor” category, with thick smog affecting various parts of the city. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the AQI averaged 349, with Bawana and Jahangirpuri reaching “severe” levels of 401 and 412, respectively.
