Delhi is bracing for water shortages as the Wazirabad barrage’s water level remains critically low, despite Haryana releasing water. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) reported reduced production at key treatment plants, Wazirabad and Chandrawal, due to insufficient raw water supply.
Delhi is expected to face water shortages in the coming days, despite Haryana releasing Yamuna water to Delhi, as the water level at Wazirabad barrage remained critically low at around 669.5 feet on Wednesday (May 27) against the normal level of 674.5 feet. The government of Haryana stated that 979.5 cusecs of water have been released via the Carrier Line Canal (CLC) and Delhi sub-branch (DSB) of the Delhi Jal Board, but the water supply has not improved.
The DJB reported a reduction in water production at two of its key water treatment plants, Wazirabad and Chandrawal. Due to a shortage of raw water supply. The disruption is expected to affect water availability in several areas across North, West and parts of South Delhi.
The Wazirabad treatment plant, which has an average production capacity of 131 million gallons per day (MGD), and the Chandrawal plant, with a capacity of 94 MGD, are currently operating below normal levels. According to officials, output at both facilities has dropped by nearly 25-30 per cent, resulting in a substantial decline in the city’s water supply.According to Delhi government officials, talks are underway with the neighbouring Haryana government to increase the raw water supply.
