Rain, Thunderstorm Hit Delhi-NCR, Heatwave Remains in Control

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued alert of impending hailstorms and thunderstorms in parts of Delhi-NCR and Haryana, predicting wind speeds of 40 to 60 km/h.

Delhi-NCR received fresh spell of rainfall accompanies by thunderstorm on Monday night, hours after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert for hailstorm and thunderstorm activity over parts of national capital and Haryana, with gusty winds expected to reach speeds of 40 to 60 kilometres per hour.

Areas likely to be affected include Narela and Bawana in Delhi, and Gohana, Gannaur, Sonipat and Kharkhoda in Haryana. Lightning has also been forecast for these areas.

The fresh spell of rainfall in northern India is caused due to western disturbance, that is expected to remain active from Monday to Wednesday, bringing clouds over Delhi-NCR, followed by light to moderate rainfall in several areas. Most parts of the city also experienced strong winds along with the showers on Sunday night too.

The IMD has also released its monthly outlook for May 2026, predicting above-normal rainfall across India. On temperatures, the department said maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal across many parts of the country during the month.

However, the IMD cautioned that despite the overall rainfall projections, some regions may still face heatwave conditions.”During May 2026, maximum temperatures are expected to be normal to below normal across many parts of the country,” the IMD said in a statement issued by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay indoors and avoid open spaces during the storm.
